Feature Volunteer: Jo
Jo is a multi-faceted volunteer who has helped the GTHS in many ways over the years. Not only is she our Monday Dog Adoption Counselor, she’s walked our dogs, been our front desk receptionist, and events/fundraising volunteer. She’s played a critical role in a number of our key events, such as Pub Night and the Walkathon. We love her fun spirit, quick wit and passion for all animals. Thank you Jo, for all you do for the GTHS and our furry friends!
How long have you been volunteering with the GTHS?
I think about 5 years.
What is your position here?
Right now, I am mostly helping with Dog Adoption Counseling. However, I have been involved with event organizing, fund raising, and it all started with dog walking. Mostly I just ask where I can help and then sort of fill in.
What keeps you coming back?
I know this is sort of a standard answer, but it truly is a combination of animals and people. I am dog obsessed, so it is a natural fit for me. I love the cats, but I am famously allergic to them, so I must limit my exposure. They know it too. I swear every time I sit down at a computer at the shelter, the lobby cat comes and perches itself on the keyboard. I am also grateful that the volunteers and staff are so extraordinary. Best of all is sending home pets to their new family. I get very emotional about it.
What pets do you share your life with?
Right now we have Jet Girl, our 10 year old Havenese dog. Her brother Rocket Boy, passed away a couple of months ago at the age of 16 (wow). Jet has taken over the job of her brother by being extra mischievous. I found her sleeping on the coffee table the other day.
Where are you from? When did you move to the area?
I grew up in Toronto and moved here 29 years ago. Glad I did. The area has changed dramatically and now lots of my childhood friends are moving here. I was just ahead of the curve.
Which talent would you most like to have?
Anything artistic. The ability to be invisible would be great too, but that is more like a super power.
What is your idea of the best day ever?
Summer. Dock. Family and friends. Maybe a beer or two.
What’s your favourite pastime (hobby)?
In the summer my husband and I go boating. We will stay out for weeks at a time. In the winter, I read a lot but binge watching TV is beginning to take over my life. It should be illegal, or perhaps there could be some kind of intervention group. The “Breaking Bad” habits group.
Do you have any phobias or fears?
Heights. We went to the Grand Canyon I could not get within 40 feet of the rim.
If you could have dinner with any celebrity, who would it be?
Ellen DeGeneris. She is funny, smart and caring.
